The annual SEABL Mid-Season Spectacular is here once again, with Knox Basketball in conjunction with the National Breast Cancer Foundation hosting the Knox Raiders vs Brisbane Spartans on Saturday 1st June.

Touted as the biggest regular season game for the Raiders over the last four years, this year won't fail to disappoint.

It is only a gold coin donation to enter per person, with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The night will consist of the ladder-leading Raiders women taking on Brisbane at 5:45pm, where MVP favourite Gabe Richards will hopefully continue her rich vein of form, currently averaging 25.4 points and 15.2 rebounds per game for Knox.

After the women's game we will have performances by Jason Coleman's Ministry of Dance as well as a set from Triple J Unearthed's 'Cardinal'.

Following these two terrific acts, the Raiders Men led by 2012 SEABL MVP CJ Massingale will take on Brisbane at 8:30pm.

We encourage fans of all ages to get in the spirit of the night, and dress up in pink costumes and outfits. The best dressed adult and child on the night will receive a prize, which will be revealed early next week so stay tuned on our Facebook page by following Knox Basketball.

This is one game you do not want to miss, so make sure you're available on Saturday 1st June so we can turn the State Basketball Centre pink for a great cause.

Knox Raiders men have had another unsuccessful weekend, dropping close encounters to Ballarat and Sandringham.

CJ Massingale would return for the Raiders on Saturday night, with Knox playing a strong first half going into half-time ahead 52-42.

The third quarter saw points dry up for Knox, only scoring 13 for the term with the Miners clawing back within five, Massingale scoring 26 to three-quarter-time.

When John Philip scored with two minutes remaining, the Raiders moved ahead by five points in a favourable position, before Shaun Bruce ran riot in the last two minutes, scoring seven points to steal victory for Ballarat 84-81.

Massingale returned with 33 points for the Raiders, while Philip finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Strong finishing with 14 points and five rebounds before fouling out.

A desperate Knox team took the court on the Sunday at Sandringham after losing one that got away the night before, seeking redemption after the Sabres initiated Knox’s losing streak on April 21.

The first quarter went basket for basket, before Liam Carroll finished the quarter with six quick points to put Knox ahead 30-25 at quarter time.

Sandringham would tie things up during the second term, as the teams once again went bucket for bucket, Sean Carroll scoring on the half-time buzzer putting Knox ahead 53-52.

The Raiders were sluggish coming out of the main break, with Sandringham quickly breaking out to a 10 point margin, but two Greg Page threes along with a three by Philip once again tied scores up, before a three by Stefan Uzelac on three quarter time put the Sabres ahead by one going into the final term.

It looked as if Massingale was going to take over in the last and lead the Raiders to their first victory in over a month, scoring seven straight points to put Knox ahead by six, but a 13-2 run by Sandringham changed the momentum of the match as they streaked away to a 98-92 victory.

Philip continued to be a standout for Knox during its tough seven game losing streak, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Massingale finished with 20 points and Strong 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Knox sit bottom of the South Conference with a 3-10 record, with their finals aspirations for 2013 awfully close to diminished.

The Raiders will face another challenge when they head to powerhouse Geelong (11-2) on Saturday night, returning to the State Basketball Centre on Sunday to take North West Tasmania.

RAIDERS WOMEN BOUNCE BACK AFTER FIRST LOSS

Knox Raiders women lost their first game of the season on Saturday night, going down to the Ballarat Lady Miners by the smallest of margins.

Early on, it looked like the Raiders would cruise to their tenth consecutive victory, opening the game with a 12-0 run leading into a 27-11 quarter time lead; Gabe Richards scoring 14 points in the opening term.

Ballarat clawed their way back though in the second, cutting the margin back to five points at half-time, and resisting a Knox push in the third to stay in touch, only trailing by four at three-quarter-time.

Throughout the fourth the lead seesawed, with Ballarat’s Kristy Rinaldi splashing a three with just under a minute left putting the Miners ahead by that very margin; the following play Kelly Wilson would come off a Richards screen to make a three of her own, once again tying up the scores.

With seven seconds left Shanae Greaves had a contentious foul called on her, sending Alice Kunek to the line who went one from two to give Ballarat the one-point victory, 82-81.

Richards finished with 32 points and 12 rebounds, while Wilson had 20 points and 11 assists.

Coming off a loss for the first time in 2013, the Raiders would face Sandringham on the Sunday, who the Raiders defeated only a month ago with a Wilson game winner.

The Sabres were the better team in the first quarter leading 21-16 at quarter-time, but the Raiders bounced back in the second locking Sandringham down defensively keeping them to six points for the quarter, as they shot it from 57 per cent from the field going ahead by 10 points at the half.

Knox continued to run away from the Sabres in the third term, extending their margin to 16 points at three-quarter-time.

Despite losing the final term 22-19, Knox were easy winners 81-68; bigs Richards and Shanae Greaves doing the damage, Richards scoring 28 points to go with her 16 rebounds, and Greaves impressing with 16 points and nine rebounds.

With their first loss on the weekend, the Raiders record stands at 10-1 as they sit top of the South Conference.

Knox will hit the road on Saturday night to take on Geelong, before heading home to the State Basketball Centre on Sunday to take on Launceston.

Knox Raiders Victorian Youth Championship (VYC) teams have had a triumphant weekend, both the men and women had ‘epic’ wins lifting team morale in both squads.
The VYC women dominated the Waverley Falcons from the get go going into the half time break with a 14-point lead (38-24). Knox took advantage of the younger Falcons in the second half using full court pressure causing 23 Waverley turnovers on their way to a 65-40 victory.
“We needed to take advantage of their (Waverley) in experience, we played a full court man and pressed of free throws the whole game; we were amazing” said Tanya Banjanin (6 points, 4 rebounds & 3 assists).
Sophie Tarabolsi established herself inside scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, Sam Castles filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists and Millie Ivanov had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“All the girls played for each other, we are starting to jell as a team which is exciting for the group” said Sophie Tarabolsi.
VYC men defeated rivals Kilsyth Cobras 75-61 at the State Basketball Centre on Sunday. After a slow start Knox dominated the fourth quarter holding the Cobras to only nine points not allowing them back in the game.
“Ben Waterhouse (25 points, 8 rebounds & 4 assists) dominated the game creating scoring opportunities for himself and the team, while Matt Leigh (11 points & 9 rebounds) and Casey Marshall (12 points & 4 rebounds) both had outstanding games” said Coach Scott Christianson.
Jack Eccleston did not play due to illness.
Currently both VYC Knox Raider teams sit in playoff contention in their conference at the midway point of the season, but will need to continue their form this weekend when they hit the road, the women play in Geelong on Sunday while the men play Waverley and Dandenong in a tough double header.

Knox Raiders Victorian Youth Championship Men (VYCM) recovered from a slow start on Sunday to defeat Sherbrooke Suns 83-75.
“After a poor first quarter (13-20), the boys lifted their intensity for the remaining three quarters on both ends of the court”, Assistant coach Dale Crotty discussed.
Leif Cope (4 points & 6 rebounds) sparked the Raiders with a chase down block on ex-Raider Elias Kafrouni in the third quarter; Matt Leigh (7 points & 10 rebounds), Simon Grant (19 points, & 13 rebounds), Dylan Hare (19 points & 6 steals) and David Tomat (12 points & 5 assists) dominated the court for Knox.
A negative for the Raiders was the shooting of Small Forward Jake Eccleston, who went 0/8 from the field including a number of lay ups.
“Our ability to execute defensively got us back in the game, we took their shooters out of their offence which resulted in good shots for us” said Assistant Dom Linossier.
Sherbrooke were held to only 12 points and turned the ball over 10 times in the fourth quarter giving Knox their sixth win of the season, placing them in fourth position in the Terrill Conference.
“The games intensity and standard far outweighed two teams sitting in the middle of the ladder; Both teams threw everything at the contest and that type of mentality will place the groups in a good position for the rest of the season” said Sherbrooke Coach Daniel Smith.
The Victorian Youth Championship Women had a week off and will play Waverley at 12pm this Sunday at the State Basketball Centre followed by the men at 2pm when they play Kilsyth Cobras.

The Tasmanian road trip was a successful one for the Knox Raiders women, with two double digit victories against Hobart and Launceston.

The Friday night saw Kelly Wilson’s 25 points, seven assists and seven rebounds help lead Knox to a 73-53 victory against the dangerous Hobart Chargers.

The Raiders led by two at quarter time, starting the second quarter with a 12-2 run to put a buffer on the Chargers, going into the main break 10 points ahead.

Hobart fought back though on their home-court in the third quarter, cutting the margin back to eight points.

With the game in the balance, Wilson delivered a massive last quarter for Knox to keep their perfect record, scoring 14 of her 25 points including two three-pointers and an important bucket when the Chargers got within five points.

Wilson was helped by MVP favourite Gabe Richards, who finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Emily Fryters’ consistent form continued with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Saturday night saw the Raiders head north of Tasmania to Launceston, where they faced the last placed Tornadoes.

In a scrappy encounter, Knox’s big guns once again shined with Richards finishing with a mammoth 37 points and 22 rebounds, confirming her status as the SEABL MVP favourite.

Fryters was also huge on the glass with 15 rebounds of her own, the Raiders outrebounding Launceston 55-28 to setup the 76-58 win.

Jess May chipped in with 13 points to be the Raiders second-top scorer, while Wilson had 10 points and six assists.

Knox dominate the stats leaders in the league, with Richards number one in scoring averaging 24.3 points per game, as well as leading rebounding averaging 15.5 with teammate Fryters second with 11.3 per game. Wilson leads the league in assists averaging 6.5 per game, emphasising Knox’s current dominance of the competition.

Coach Cheryl Chambers has also been named April’s SEABL Coach of the Month, coaching the only undefeated team in the league with help from Assistant Robbie Baldwin who has taken the reins in Chambers’ absence the last three games.

The Raiders women push their record to 9-0, with two away games ahead of them this weekend; the 6-5 Ballarat on the Saturday night, followed by the tricky Sandringham on Sunday. Two victories this weekend will see them eclipse their 2012 season opening win streak of 10 games.
