KNOX MASTERS TEAMS MAKE GRAND FINAL

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Both Knox’s Masters teams have made the Grand Final in the Myths and Legends Masters Basketball Tournament 2012 held in Bulleen.

Unfortunately both teams fell short in the final, but was a terrific effort by both the men and women regardless.

Both teams have provided us with a report documenting the experience over the weekend.

MEN

A spectator’s log

For the first time ever, Knox Raiders entered a Men’s Masters team in the Myths and Legends Tournament.  The team was put together by Ricky Baldwin (#8), a past Knox Raiders player and current Knox Raiders Coach of the 14/4 Boys. Together the team comprised of 8 individuals who had never played together before. Of that team, three others were past Knox Raiders members being Steven Murphy (#4), David Stow (#31) and Steven Lunardon (#15). Other members who participated were current Knox Raiders Coach Tim Corr (#23), John Allen (#12), Darren Smith (#10) & David Grecko (#9).

Considering their varied pasts and abilities, the group gelled very well as a solid team who played their way to the grand final. Unfortunately they couldn’t take home the winning prize however it was a solid effort.

The tournament director presented the prize money and stated that he actually expected Knox to win the tournament. He also stated that this grand final was the highest standard of basketball that he had seen since the tournament began.

Due to the State Basketball Centre now being open and it is the home of the Knox Raiders Basketball Club, it would be great to have Knox run its own Masters Tournament which would certainly attract a lot of past legends.

WOMEN

The Knox Raiders women's Masters team took to the court again last weekend in the Myths and Legends Basketball Clubs annual event held in Bulleen.

After a stunning and surprising win at the Shepparton tournament the ladies were keen for further success. With 2 wins and 1 loss during the rounds the team made the 40+ grand final on percentage....phew!! After a hard fought battle by some very tired ladies they went down by 3 points claiming silver; however it was technically a win as they had to give away 5 points to the opposition due to the average age rule.

Many thanks to our awesome support crew Kenny, Steve, Aussie, the Donnelly kids, Mr
& Mrs Niven, Matt Parkinson and Ricky Baldwin & co.

The team consisted of:
Miriam Cormack (née Edwards)
Cheryl Bishop (née Ferguson)
Sue Eggens (née Ferguson)
Rebecca Niven

Tania Donnelly (née Robinson)
