VBRA Knox hits a new record!

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

For the first time ever, in 2017, every single referee from the Victorian Basketball Referees Association – Knox Branch (VBRA Knox) that have nominated to represent Knox on the MUVJBL has passed all the criteria to become Junior Panel (MUVJBL) Referees.

To nominate for Junior Panel, referees must have held a level 1A at least 12 months and meet specific criteria of the theory, practical and fitness testing programs.

A new record was set with twenty-six (26) VBRA Knox nominations accepted for this season – the highest number of referees from a single club or Branch.

“We are obviously very proud of our program, but also of these referees who are putting themselves forward to progress their interest in officiating elite basketball.  These referees are the future of our Branch and will help train the next group coming through behind them… many who are not even referees yet” says Daniel Battye, President of VBRA Knox Branch.

VBRA Knox is the largest association of referees in the state with over 340 members, life members and affiliate referees as it December 2016. This includes referees ranging from beginners (green shirts) all the way through to our highest qualifies referee (Chris Reid) who is a FIBA official - Currently refereeing the NBL Final Series.

The pathway from domestic refereeing to elite refereeing is similar to that of a player - starting in a domestic team, trying out for a junior representative team, through into a senior program and then eventually into a national or international team.  A referee will progress through the same pathway from domestic/grass roots through to national leagues.  We currently have two referees on Basketball Australia’s 2016/17 National Referee Panel.

The domestic referee program at Knox has been considered 6 times in the last 10 years as the best program in the State of Victoria.  This has allowed us in more recent times to produce some of the best up and coming referees in the state.
