Players and Parents,
After a long and thorough try outs process, we have selected our teams for the 2016-2017 VJBL season.
I would like to sincerely thank all of the parents and players for dedicating your precious time, cutting holidays short and scheduling your lives around the tryouts. Your enthusiasm and passion for your child’s sporting opportunities is greatly appreciated by us all. I would also like to thank our coaches and volunteers who have devoted countless hours and sacrificed time with their own families to make our tryouts professional and organised. A big thank you also goes out to the entire Knox Junior Raiders committee, headed by David Phillips, for their help and assistance.
There are a lot of factors that go into selecting our teams. What position you play; who you’re competing against who plays that same position; and even being top age or bottom age can be factors. We aim to keep a nucleus of bottom age players together in a second or third team who we foresee being able to play at a VC level in 12 months time. The fact that you dominate in your domestic games doesn’t necessarily translate to being able to do the same in representative basketball. Representative basketball is a more structured and disciplined environment where players have roles and responsibilities to perform. This is something we also test during our try outs to see which players can really grasp the offensive concepts we are trying to teach.
The try outs process is never an easy one for players, parents or coaches, but we feel that we have been extremely diligent with our processes throughout. Having said that, I would encourage everyone (parents and players) to make the most of your selection, work as hard as you can this season and strive to make yourself a better player for next season.
For those players who were unsuccessful this time, I would like to sincerely thank you and your families for your participation and efforts. As disappointing as it can be, I would strongly encourage you to keep working on your game and not to give up. I highly recommend participating in any of our development programs throughout the holidays and next year to help build up your skills and develop your knowledge. I would also like to invite you to receive some feedback on where to improve, so please send me a brief email listing your name and age group and I will have the Age Group Head Coach provide this for you.
